Zynga and WFP fight hunger

Zynga, a social gaming powerhouse, first partnered with the World Food Programme in 2010 to support WFP’s operations in Haiti following the earthquake there. The company continues to use its wide social media network to raise awareness and funds for WFP's operations around the world by engaging its more than 240 million monthly active users in the fight against hunger.

Through successful campaigns on Zynga’s most popular games, such as Farmville, Chefville and ChinaGame, among others, millions of players have purchased limited edition, WFP-branded items to support vulnerable communities worldwide.

Zynga donates 100 percent of the proceeds to WFP, and to date, players have generously provided more than 9 million meals for school children.

Today, Zynga continues to expand its collaboration with WFP to allow players and fans to join the fight against hunger.

Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, players of Farmville rallied to donate over US$1.5 million to the emergency food relief efforts in only five days! A year later, WFP and people across Haiti said Thank You!

School meals encourage children to go to and stay in school. With a full stomach, kids can also concentrate on their lessons.

Nutrition activities support pregnant and nursing mothers to ensure that children receive proper nutrition in the critical first 1,000 days of life.

In emergencies, WFP gets food to people who need it the most, saving the lives of mothers and children and of victims of conflict and natural disasters.

Empowering women farmers to increase their productivity and access to markets plays a key role in guaranteeing food security for households and communities.

The amount donated to World Food Programme for tree purchases will be determined by calculating the aggregate value of purchases made using in-game currency. An “exchange rate” will be used to determine the value of the in-game currency in U.S. dollars. Zynga will then remit 70% of the U.S. dollar value to WFP USA, a registered 501(c)3 organization, as recognized by the Internal Revenue Service in the United States. WFPUSA works closely with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to provide meals for WFP programmes. The remaining 30% of the U.S. dollar value will be retained by Facebook. In addition, Zynga will donate $0.25 for every tree level-up. Player purchases are not tax-deductible. Offer is expected to run until August 5, 2013. Dates for this promotion may vary.
