WFP Online Intern – April 2013

We all have our own reasons for getting involved in solving hunger. Our online intern this month hopes to inspire as many people as possible to join WFP’s work and to do their part to help out. A passion for food and interest in nutrition motivated her to become a WFP student online intern. Here’s how you can join her. Meet Erika McCulloch.

•         Lives in: Oxford, UK
•         Studies: Nutrition, Oxford Brookes University
•         Favourite food: Chinese Sweet and Sour Pork
•         Next place she’d like to travel: Northern Africa
•         Twitter: @PrincessNomad

What do you want to be when you "grow up"?
I love food, I always have and I always will. I want to be a nutritionist and help people understand food; what it does to us and why we need it. I also want to help those that don’t have it and really need it.

What motivated you to be an online intern?
I have always wanted to get involved with humanitarian work and aid relief and, since starting my university degree, this want to help out has grown even further. I saw an announcement for the WFP online internship on my Twitter feed one day and thought it would be the perfect way to get people around the world thinking about what’s going on and hopefully stir them up too.

What inspires you to get involved in the fight against hunger?
I have a “soft spot” for those less fortunate than myself and am very interested in Africa. I believe that every child, every woman and man has a right to have food and a healthy life and not have to suffer. For those of us that CAN, we should help.

Why are you interested in WFP and the work we do around the world?
I think that the work WFP is doing around the world is amazing and so inspiring. I believe that what WFP is doing will make a difference not just today but for the future – yes, there is a long way to go still but being that it’s such a large organisation, the possibilities are endless.

What do you hope to accomplish this month?
This month my goal is to get as many people as possible thinking about world hunger and moving to help. As technology advances, it’s actually a lot easier to reach people via social media; donations are a click away, is a click away and my goal is to get as many people taking part, not just in the UK but around the world.
