Spring has sprung with WFP in Germany

“The coldest March in 125 years” – those are headlines read in newspapers across Europe, including those in Germany. WFP welcomed spring by giving away free seed packets to a local primary school in Berlin.

Students from The Free School of Berlin (Freie Schule Berlin) are excited about WFP’s gift of flower and vegetable seed packets. They will use the seeds to grow flowers and vegetables in the school’s own vegetable garden.

WFP staff member Christiane Tomaschewski visited a local primary school in Berlin this month and surprised the 9- to 11-year olds with a big box containing flower and vegetable seeds. The students were very keen to learn about which variety of flowers and vegetables the seed packets contained. The school had just completed a week of projects themed around spring and the students were excited to show Christiane a small wooden box filled with dirt in which they had started to grow plants, which once temperatures increase, will later be re-planted into the school’s own vegetable garden.

Christiane also shared more information about WFP’s work including our support of smallholder farmers in developing countries. Our Purchase for Progress provides smallholder farmers in 20 pilot countries with a greater incentive to invest in their production, as they have the possibility to sell to a reliable buyer and receive a fair price for their crops. Christiane also brought the students a copy of our hunger map which shows where in the world WFP works and malnutrition rates per country.

Two girls from the class handed over a donation in the amount of €25.60 from money they had collected from people on the street by selling pictures they had painted. The donation will support our school meals programme. WFP was humbled by and grateful for the donation and send a certificate to the girls. The donation will help WFP to provide more than 125 school children with a nutritious school meal.

Seed packets were kindly donated to WFP Germany by Carl Pabst Samen & Saaten GmbH to give to schools and educational projects. WFP Germany is happy to give away seed packets to schools or other educational projects which seek to share the joy of and expand knowledge of gardening.
