Welcome to the Classroom Activities section of the site. The materials you find here have been developed by educators, with sponsorship by the Alabama 4-H Program in conjuction with Universities Fighting World Hunger at Auburn University, The Cape Breton University Children's Rights Centre, and the Canadian International Development Agency. Please take the time to check out their sites and materials.

Crisis in Pakistan - New Teaching Materials released:

Teach Hunger – Pakistan” is a lesson plan which takes students through the current situation, teaching geography, writing, and research skills along the way.

The lesson plan makes use of video footage from the affected areas, and gives students an overview of Pakistan, and the emergency assistance being delivered by World Food Programme.

There are 1.02 billion undernourished people in the world today. That means one in nearly six people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life. Hunger and malnutrition are in fact the number one risk to the health worldwide — greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

So what can be done? By taking action to raise awareness, everybody can make a difference. Walk the World is aimed at doing just that.

Where in the World - Haiti
Subject:  Current Affairs, Research Skills, Geography, Social Studies & Language Arts

Bring the effort to help Haiti into the classroom. On our web site, you can always find teaching materials incorporating the current situation in Haiti into the regular curriculum in your school. The newest addition, "Where in the World - Haiti" combines geography, social studies, and writing exercises while encouraging students' interest in current events and social issues.

The Hunger Obstacle Course

Age Range:  Grades 7-9
Subject:  Social Studies & Language Arts
Collaborative Learning and Problem-solving

Hunger affects populations both globally and domestically. Students should be aware of the obstacles to food security and good levels of nutrition that many people face every day. Encouraging students to find solutions to these problems heightens their awareness of the issues, and enables them to realize that members of a community can help each other in concrete ways. This activity engages participants in creative problem solving though a time-limited process of generating solutions to different hunger-related problems. Small groups of students circulate around the room and write down solutions to each of the hunger obstacles.

Students will practice addition and subtraction of decimals while considering the small domestic budgets of people in developing countries.

 The Hunger Tree

 Age Range: Grades 4-6
Subjects: Social Studies, Language Arts/English
Critical Thinking, Making Connections, Visualisation of Problems, Collaborative Learning
This activity uses the image of a tree to help students understand the problem of “hunger” that may seem overwhelming and impossible to change at first. This Hunger Tree activity helps young people think though the problem and why it occurs. They also think together about actions that can be taken to help reduce the problem of hunger.

The Millennium Development Goals

 Age Range: Grades 7-9
Subjects:  Social Studies
Critiical Thinking, Collaborative Learning
Eradicating hunger, part of the MDG No.1, is the key to development. While people are hungry, all other development activities are thwarted. The hungry can concentrate little other than their next meal. Hungry mothers give birth to hungry children, who, if they live long enough, grow into hungry adults.

Web of Connections

 Age Range: Grades 7-9
Subjects:  Social Studies
Critiical Thinking, Collaborative Learning, and Problem-solving
This activity will help foster an understanding of hunger in the context of other social issues.  After participating in this activity, group members should be able to more effectively speak about the ways in which hunger is connected to other issues in the world which also impact the plight of those in poverty.  Using a ball of string and cards that represent these various issues, group members will construct a “web” of connections between the given topics.

Where does our food come from? And more importantly, why does it travel so far to reach us? This activity illustrates the interdependency of our global food system, and encourages critical thought and reflection. A trip to the supermarket is often a voyage around the world!
 

 

 

  

Introduction to Food Force

Age Range:  Grades 4-7, Ages 9-13
Subject:  Social Studies 
Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Note Taking, Presentation Skills
In groups, students will play the Food Force game, each group focusing on a particular mission. Each group will make a brief presentation to the class describing the mission they were assigned, focusing on the particular needs each mission fulfills.
   

  

 

What to do about Malnutrition

Age Range:  Grades 7-9, Ages 11-14
Subject:  English
Research Skills, Collaborative Learning, Presentational Skills, Writing to Explain
Students will create a mock United Nations conference where they will address the issue of child malnutition and how it relates to children’s rights, based on study the Millennium Development Goals, and of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
 

 

 

My Travelling Breakfast

Age Range:  Grades 4-6, Ages 10-12
Subject:  Language Arts
Creative writing, poetry
Students will write a fictional, illustrated story in the first or third person, or an illustrated poem animating (personifying) their food’s journey from where it began to where it ended.
 
This activity can be used as a follow up to “How’d that get on my plate?”

Eat Your Way to School

Students will discover the impact oWFP School Feeding Programmes have on children and youth in developing countries by comparing attendance records of these schools before and after implementation. Studetns will then reflect upon ways in which School Feeding addresses children's rights with reference to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
    
 
 
 
   

Moving Food

Students will consider the different speeds of transportation used for delivering food assistance, and make choices as to which mode of transport is best suited to different situations.
    
 
 
 
 

Stone Soup

Stone Soup is a traditional folktale found in many parts of the world. In some versions the main character convinces people that they can make soup from a rusty old nail and sometimes it’s an axe which is the chief ingredient! But whether it’s a stone or a nail or an axe, the story helps us to think about our place in the world. This new version of the story was written especially for World Food Day 2008 and focuses on ways that we can help other people.

 

   

Fighting Hunger the Rights Way - English

Fighting Hunger the Rights Way is designed to coincide with prescribed learning outcomes for English, math, science and social studies in grades 4-6 and 7-9. This format provides teachers the opportunity to teach about children’s rights and world malnutrition while also covering learning outcomes.
 

 

 

 

Fighting Hunger the Rights Way - French

Le programme Lutter contre la faim à l’aide des droits est conçu pour correspondre aux résultats d’apprentissage en français, en mathématiques, en sciences et en études sociales de la 4e à la 6e année et de la 7e à la 9e année. Ce format donne aux enseignants l’occasion d’enseigner des connaissances sur les droits de l’enfant et la malnutrition dans le monde tout en couvrant les résultats d’apprentissage.
