WFP Teams Up With Zumba Fitness On "The Great Calorie Drive"

“Don’t just burn calories, donate them!” With this message, WFP’s new partnership with Zumba Fitness raises awareness about hunger in a whole new way – by encouraging people to exercise for a cause.

Through the “Great Calorie Drive,” Zumba Fitness -- the largest dance-fitness company in the world and creator of the Zumba dance-fitness party workout— and WFP have come together to tap into the passion of Zumba fans worldwide.

From now through June 2013, Zumba students can shake and donate to help fight world hunger. Each time someone checks into a Zumba class through a mobile app (for up to three classes), Zumba will donate $0.14 for the average 750 calories a person burns per class.
 
"'The Great Calorie Drive' is incredibly motivating -- it's about taking care of others while you take care of yourself," said Jay Aldous, WFP Director of Private Sector Partnerships. "This is a terrific initiative and a great example of how technology can be put to use for a great cause."
 
With Zumba instructors in more than 185 countries, this is a truly global initiative that raises awareness of and funds for the fight against hunger. Indeed, “The Great Calorie Drive” events are being organized in cities around the world, including New York, London, Hamburg, Lille and Milan.
 
Zumba enthusiasts can also help the cause by purchasing a special limited-edition line of Zumba apparel and accessories created specifically for “The Great Calorie Drive” initiative. For each purchase, Zumba Fitness will donate 30 percent of the sale price.
 
Donations from the classes and from purchases will be split between WFP and Feeding America, the United States’ largest domestic hunger-relief organization. Funds for WFP will support school meals programmes in Nicaragua and food and nutrition assistance for people affected by HIV in Swaziland. Zumba aims to raise US$500,000 for each organization.
