In Bikekneno, a small village in Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia, Food-For-Asset activities inspire people to hope for a hunger-free future.

NTT -  In Bikekneno, a small village far from urban areas, located in Timor Tengah Selatan (TTS) Sub-District, province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), most people are farmers. Last year, harsh weather conditions triggered crop failure causing food shortages for the villagers.

Delivering just food assistance would have been easiest option, but WFP in Indonesia wanted to empower the villagers to better cope with the harsh weather conditions. Through WFP's Food-For-Assets (FFA) activities, farmers from Bikekneno were able to receive food assistance in exchange for the work (i.e., clearing and plowing land for plantation) they are doing to prepare their communal lands for future harvest.

In this vision of food security for the most vulnerable, WFP is not working alone. In partnerhip with the Forestry Department of TTS Sub-District, WFP is supporting the Government’s commitment to achieving food and nutrition security for all Indonesians.  As part of the FFA programme, WFP provided the food and the Forestry Department provided the training and the work plan for the farmers.

Now Bikekneno communities are working beyond FFA activities. From the Forestry Department, the villagers learned how to better prepare land for crop cultivation.  The Forestry field staff, lead by a woman from Bikekneno, managed to inculcate a sense of self-sufficiency and sustainability in the community.  The farmers now prepare additional land for corn, sweet potatoes and beans without rice assistance from WFP. Inspired by FFA activities, the Forestry Department in TTS is steadily leading Bikekneno towards food security.
