The President of the National Parliament of Nicaragua, René Núñez Téllez, and  WFP Representative, Helmut W. Rauch, signed a Collaboration Agreement which defines the relationship between the two institutions with regards to cooperation and technical assistance on issues related to Nutrition and Food Security.

“Alleviating hunger and poverty is extremely important, and we are delighted that today, WFP’s Director is signing this Agreement of Collaboration in order that we can continue to work together and enact laws under the Law of Food Sovereignty and Security,” stated Núñez Téllez upon signing the agreement.
Currently, representatives of the National Assembly are in the process of consultation on the proposed Access to Education and School Feeding Law, which would provide a legal framework for the provision of free school meals for all children who attend public schools in the country.
"The fight against hunger is not off the agenda of legislators and we are fully able to help them in their efforts to pass new laws and initiatives which will benefit the Nicaraguan people," said WFP's Representative, who also highlighted the key achievements made by the Government of Nicaragua in its attempts to reduce hunger and malnutrition.
The agreement covers a five year period which includes technical assistance, with specific emphasis on initiatives aimed at women, children, indigenous communities, poor rural families and other vulnerable groups amongst the population.
The Agreement also covers the issues of community resilience to climate change and strengthening the work of the Parliamentary Forum Against Hunger (FPCH), Chapter Nicaragua.
