This important donation will benefit more than 1.4 million students attending more than 21,000 public schools nationwide and represents a savings of more than US$ 7 million to the Government of Honduras which covered transportation and storage costs as part of an agreement with WFP to manage the School Feeding Programme.
The School Feeding Programme is the most important social programme managed by the Government of Honduras, which has been under joint implementation with the World Food Programme for 13 years.
In 2012 the School Feeding Programme was financed by the Government of Honduras (87%) and WFP (13%) who received support from the Government of Canada, the Government of Brazil and the private sector through WFP’s Country Programme.
In Honduras WFP is responsible for scheduling, purchasing, quality control, storage, transportation, distribution and monitoring of the School Feeding Programme. Over 90% of the products for the programme were purchased through a decentralized system which now benefits more than 11.400 Honduran small producers from six departments.
The School Feeding Programme runs with the support and supervision from the Office of the First Lady, the Ministry of Social Development’s Healthy Schools Programme, and the Ministry of Education.
The objectives of the School Feeding Programme are:
1. Increase enrollment of children;
2. Improve attendance of children;
3. Improve the learning ability and concentration of children;
4. Reduce gender inequality among pre- and primary school children;
5. Improve the Government’s capacity to implement the School Feeding Programme.
The School Feeding Programme serves as an incentive for families to send their children to school, ensuring that short-term hunger does not diminish the ability of school learning.
