Grupo Comidas Donates $260,000 to Fight Against Hunger in Honduras
TEGUCIGALPA. –Grupo Comidas Especializadas, through its brands Pizza Hut, KFC and Denny’s and their customers’ support—donated US$260,000 to the World Food Programme as part of the global campaign From Hunger to Hope.
Grupo Comidas Marketing Manager, Rene Turcios and Chief of Operation, Nelson Barahona, made the donation during a ceremony where the Minister of Social Development, Hilda Hernandez, and WFP Representative in Honduras, Pasqualina Di Sirio were present. For the fifth consecutive year, Grupo Comidas joins the global campaign From Hunger to Hope which took place in more than 60 restaurants nationwide.
The aim of the campaign is to raise funds to support thousands of Honduran children suffering from malnutrition. Since WFPs and Grupo Comidas collaboration in 2010 more than 20,000 people have received support.
Grupo Comidas with the support of its customers has raised more than US$728,000. Their efforts have helped to improve the health and nutritional status of children under 5, pregnant and nursing women.
Their latest donation will be dispersed with the following objectives:
• Target number of beneficiaries: 8,040
• Training of 80 healthcare volunteers to improve nutritional surveillance.
• Training of 30 health officials to improve maternal and child health practices.
• Distribution of 284,000 kilogrammes of food
• Strengthening capacity of 10 health units located in the Drought Corridor
"Hunger is a global crisis and this programme shows how goodwill and solidarity can alleviate hunger in Honduras. In partnership with our customers and WFP, we have the opportunity and responsibility to help reduce hunger and malnutrition statistics in Honduras. We can make a difference and we are succeeding," said Rene Turcios, Food Marketing Manager of Grupo Comidas.
“The support of the private sector, especially from Grupo Comidas, has allowed WFP to assist more than 20,000 people in their alimentary recovery through the Vulnerable Groups Programme. We thank your executives, restaurant managers, technical and operational staff and especially your customers because without their support these results would not be possible," said WFP Representative, Pasqualina DiSirio.
