To achieve this goal, WFP will provide advice, expertise, and technical capacity in regard to the reduction of deficiencies of vitamins and minerals. This activity will take place through a programme of home fortification with micronutrient powder.
These micronutrients, labeled by WFP as "Nutritional Sprinkles" are a powder mixture of vitamins and minerals containing iron, zinc, folic acid, vitamin A and vitamin C. These sprinkles are specially designed to be administered to children 6 months to 5 years old.
Additionally, educational activities are carried out on healthy eating, prevention of anemia, the proper use of the micronutrient powder for community mothers, housewives and local institutions.
This agreement is a continuation of the strategic partnership between WFP and the Department of the Atlantic towards the control and prevention of undernutrition in children. The delivery of micronutrients by the WFP has been carrying out during 2011 in several municipalities of the Department of the Atlantic such as Polo Nuevo Palmar de Varela, Malambo, Manatee and St. Thomas, among others.
The agreement was signed by the Governor of the Atlantic, José Antonio Segebre, and the WFP Representative in Colombia, Praveen Agrawal. In the coming days, members of both institutions will work in unison to aid the municipalities and the target population, as well as the implementation strategy of the project.
