ROME - With a billion malnourished people in the world, the fight against hunger sometimes seems a mammoth task – something that only governments can deal with. Well, individuals can do a lot too, not only through donations but also by helping us spread the word. Here are some ideas:
1 Give a Gift of Hope
Looking for a last-minute gift? Or even a late one? Help us fight hunger in the name of someone you love. You pay for something concrete – like enough nutritious biscuits to feed 100 people in an emergency – and then a person of your choice receives an e-card telling them about this ‘Gift of Hope’ made on their behalf.
2 Shop Against Hunger
Want a more traditional gift? Go to our Shop Against Hunger. It’s an online shopping mall where you can get anything from cakes to cactuses. For every online purchase, a small percentage goes to help feed hungry people worldwide. You don’t pay anything extra for these goods, but someone in need will notice the difference.
Tweetable hunger facts
Click on the facts above and access your Twitter account.
3 Do the Hunger Quiz
Make sure you're up-to-speed on the issues by taking the Hunger Quiz at the bottom of this page. If you know the answers to these 10 questions, you're ready to explain 'hunger basics' to others.
4 Become a WFP Facebook fan
Are you on Facebook? Go to our page and become a fan. It’s another way of keeping up-to-date on the issues and showing your support. Send the link to friends and tell us what you think about what we do around the world.
5 Tweet hunger facts to friends/teachers
Use Twitter to send the three facts you see to the right to a few friends. You’re already helping inform the world about hunger. When you’ve done that, send a teacher one of the ready-made ‘hunger’ lessons plans that you can download from wfp.org. We’d love to see hunger issues talked about more in school.
6 Play FreeRice online game
Go to FreeRice.com and play the popular quiz game. For every right answer, 10 grains of rice go to the hungry. It’s the advertisers who pay, not you. Warning: it’s wickedly addictive. You could also try Zynga’s Fishville game on Facebook. You’ll find another way to help WFP there.
7 Make a video about hunger
A budding film-maker? Make a ‘short’ video about hunger and enter our Hungerbytes competition. Prizes include a trip to the frontlines of hunger. If that’s too demanding, check out our On the road video blog. It shows what's involved in fighting hunger worldwide. If you like what you see, share the links.
8 Educate yourself
If you want some stimulating reading, why not check out some thought-provoking articles on hunger that in the international media. Here's one on food wastage to get you started. You can find more by going to the Worth Reading section of wfp.org. We don't necessarily agree with everything you'll read, but we do think it's worth thinking about.
9 Billion for billion video
Watch the Billion for a Billion video and share the link with friends. It carries one of the key messages we want to get out in 2010. Also have a look at the other videos on the WFP YouTube channel.
10 Play Food Force game
Download this compelling computer game, which means you take part in a simulation of WFP’s life-saving work. Pass the link on to kids who may like it.
11 Put a photo on the ‘Wall’
If you want a cool gift for a loved one, think about this: honour them by making a donation and putting their picture on our Wall Against Hunger.
12 Cook a meal for a dollar
Want to do something offline? How about cooking a meal for less than US$1. Invite your friends to join you, but tell them more than a billion people do this every day. If you cook something tasty, tell us about it on our Facebook page. You might find a few pointers here.
