Japanese Journalist Donates Prize Winnings To WFP

Akira Ikegami, one of Japan’s most widely-followed journalists, recently donated the full winnings of a prestigious literary prize to WFP. Ikegami covered the UN food agency’s response to the 2011 drought emergency in the Horn of Africa as well as in Jordan assisting Syrian refugees. The Juzo Itami Award honouring excellence in literary and visual expression comes to around $10,500 in cash. “Since I saw how WFP staff were trying hard to deliver assistance while utilizing limited food, funding, and human resources in an effective way, I have been thinking about how I could contribute,” Ikegami said in a statement. “With a dream that one day, no one will ever need WFP’s assistance, I will continue to support WFP’s work.”
