Goma Town - Destruction

Photo:
Summary:

DR Congo, Goma, October 2003

A large part of Goma town was destroyed when Nyiragonga volcano erupted in January 2002. Lava from the volcano - only a few kilometres away - flowed quickly into town and down to the shores of Lake Kivu - demolishing houses, roads and the airport runway. Thousands of people were displaced from their homes and remain in temporary accomodation.
