Sri Lanka: School Feeding Encourages Students To Stay In School

Cooking For 500 Kids Five Times A Week

These cooks, who are also parents of children attending Tharanikulam Ganesh School in Vavunya, prepare meals for 500 students five times a week. By cooking in the school, these women also receive food assistance for their families from WFP while their children go to school.

Looking Forward To WFP School Meals

Most children at Tharanikulam Ganesh School don't eat before coming here.  Today, they receive rice, lentil curry and vegetables for lunch.

Nourished Bodies, Active Minds

These girls are able to concentrate and study better after their school meal.

For A Bright Future

Twelve-year old Sellathurai Sutharshan started school at Tharanikulam Ganesh the same year WFP started its School Feeding Programme in Vavunya.  His mother, who makes sure he goes to school every day, is a widow.  "I try to do well in school for her", he says.

Tharanikulam Ganesh School in Vavunya was one of the areas in Sri Lanka most affected by the recent civil war. Now that there is peace in the country, WFP's School Feeding Programme, which started in 2003, is helping to bring children back to school and keep them there.
