A crowd awaits for the start of food distribution in Wantiguera. Amongst them are people who have recently returned to their home after the fighting and other who have found refuge there from nearby villages and small towns after walking for several days across the bush.

Lentils are distributed alongside maize, vegetable oil and salt. Rations should last for one month.

The World Food Programme is providing assistance to 20,000 people in the Bouar area. There have been large population movements due to fighting over the last months.

24 year old widow Therese says that the rations she received in Wantiguera will help feed her three young children. ‘We’ve had very little to eat. This will help us a lot.’

Many women unaccompanied by their husbands came to the distribution. They have sought protection amongst the Bouar community after escaping the violence.

Walking home with the bag of 25 kg of maize, part of a one-month ration that also included lentils, vegetable and salt. ‘I am so pleased to have oil, I will prepare a nice meal’, said one elderly woman who has recently spent two month hiding in the bush.
