Bolivia: A Fridge Transforms the Businesses of 300 Women 01

The fair was organized to celebrate the inauguration of a fridge, which will allow producers like Justina to preserve their products, guaranteeing its sale in a near future and generate income for their families.

Honey producer of the city of Padcaya weighs a cylinder of honey that is used to sweeten drinks. The idea of the fridge is that these women can keep their production well placed to supply its markets throughout the whole year.

Peach producers of the city of Padcaya shows his production of peaches in juice in the biofair of ecological produce. The purchase and the installation of this fridge was carried out by WFP and the Ministry of Rural and Land Development through the National Council of Ecological Production, the Departmental Committee of Ecological Production of Tarija and the Committees of Ecological Production from the municipalities of Padcaya and Uriondo.

Peach producer of the city of Uriondo shows her production of dehydrated peaches that are used to make drinks. Besides purchasing the fridge, WFP also trained these women on how to operate and maintain the fridge.

Ecological vegetable producer from the city of Uriondo shows her production of green beans during the biofair. Purchasing the fridge will allow the women and other producers to store their production in good conditions and have the ability to sell their produce throughout the year.

Claudia Tanquiro, fruit producer in the city of Uriondo, shows her production of membillo marmalade in the biofair. Another aim of the project is to link the women and other producers with the local school feeding programme.

The purchase of this fridge is part of a UN interagency initiative, which is supported by the Millennium Development Goals Fund (MDG-F), supported by the Government of Spain.

Ecological producers from the cities of Padcaya and Uriondo visit the fridge that will allow for a better conservation of their production and to commercialize it better. WFP aims to assist these producers in selling their production to the school feeding programmes, which are administered by the municipal governments of Padcaya and Uriondo.

It's a fridge, but its operation will benefit more than 1,000 Bolivian ecological producers, among them 300 women who are beekeepers, in the municpalities of Padcaya and Uriondo. To celebrate this event, the producers organized a "bio-fair" to showcase their products. This project is supported by the MDG Achievement Fund.
