Most at risk from the annual food shortages are young children. WFP provides food to over 260 community feeding centres, with plans to double that number in coming months with the assistance of the government, UNICEF and NGOs. Children suffering from moderate malnutrition are given a ‘porridge’ of mineral-rich corn-soya blend and sugar twice each day – morning and evening. It is designed as a supplement to their regular diet and to guard against progression to the acute stages of malnutrition. Pregnant and breast-feeding mothers also receive a monthly ration of food.
