Chad, Bahai, February 2004 - Refugees living in the open air

Summary:

Chad, Bahai, February 2004

The dry river in background is the border with Sudan, where armed Arab militias hide on the Sudanese side. Women take great risks to fetch water from holes in the riverbed and are regularly beaten up, raped or even abducted. Men being shot at on sight, they do not take the chance to go close to the border.

The border around the small town of Adré became very insecure. In fact, Arab militias backed by the Sudanese government (called Jeenjaweeds) regularly cross the border in order to loot cattle, food and belongings and to take some men as hostage.
