Mobile Technology For Data Collection In Zambia

A massive scale-up of the government's social cash tranfser programme necessited a major rethink of the data collection process. This is where WFP's Mobile Delivery and Tracking unit stepped in with an innovative technical solution.

Zambia was reclassified by the World Bank as a lower middle income country in 2011. While it has maintained an admirable economic growth rate at over 6 percent for the past decade, Zambia's human development indicators remain static, with the country still ranking 163 out of 186 countries in the 2012 Human Development Index. Zambia's population is 13 million, with 61 percent living in urban and 39 percent in rural areas.

WFP Donates Digital Tablets to ACTESA

WFP Country Director Simon Camelbeek hands a tablet to Dr. George Magai, Director of Trade for the Alliance for Commodity Trade in Eastern and Southern Africa (ACTESA) at a handover ceremony on 11 July. The ceremony marked WFP's donation of more than 30 digital communication devices (tablet computers) to the specialized agency of COMESA. The tablets, valued at US$12,600 in total, will enable ACTESA to improve its monitoring of trade activity and food supply at 30 border points, thus enhancing the coordination of food aid and humanitarian response in the region.
