For a third consecutive year, Syrians are facing a harsh winter amid civil war. Food distributions like this one in Damascus are critical for the many families in need.
Recent assessments show that almost half the population inside Syria is having trouble getting enough food.
In 2014, WFP is expanding emergency operations and planning to reach over 7 million people - over 4 million inside Syria and nearly 3 million refugees in neighboring countries.
Syria is WFP's largest and most complex emergency worldwide.
WFP is appealing for close to US$2 billion to assist over 7 million Syrians in urgent need of food assistance in 2014.
In addition to food, WFP has distributed close to 10,000 litres of fuel to internally displaced families living in ten shelters in Damascus, and 35 shelters in Homs, Hama and Rural Damascus. The fuel is used in stoves for both cooking and heating.
Meanwhile, outside Syria, WFP is assisting refugees in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Turkey, mostly by distributing food vouchers. We are also providing nutritious snacks for refugees in school.
Nutritious foods provided by WFP help to ensure that children are able to grow up strong and healthy.
