This is Mariano Muñoz’s makeshift home where he lives with his wife and seven children after Tropical Storm 12E devastated the community of La Catarina, El Triunfo, Choluteca, southern region of Honduras. A WFP food-for-work project, supported by Australia and Brazil, is helping Mariano's and other families to rebuild their homes and start a new life.
Here is Mariano with his wife and their youngest daughter standing next to what will become their new home. “This is a dream come true, before we had a small house now we are building a bigger one," said Mariano. "This make me feel very proud because I just need to put the roof and it is thanks to the help we have received.”
Currently a food-for-work project is being implemented in the area, supported by the governments of Australia and Brazil that donated rice and corn that are part of the food rations that the families receive for the rehabilitation phase of the different areas affected. Here Mariano (far right with red cap) waits for his family ration.
Mariano signs the document to receive his food ration. La Catarina community was isolated for 12 days last October 2011 during Tropical Storm 12E. Mariano remembers seeing many houses, including his, crumbling or sliding down hill due to excesive rains and flooding.
La Catarina is one of the 27 communities in the department of Choluteca being supported by WFP's programmes aimed at helping locals --like Mariano--to recover the assets and rebuild their lives through food for work activities. More than 150 metric tons of food has been distributed in this community for the post/emergency recovery in the southern region of Honduras.
A group of children wait while their parents pick up their family rations as part of WFP's food-for-work project. Families are picking up their rations made up of beans, rice and vegetable oil. The beans and rice were donated by the governments of Australia and Brazil.
