The results of a joint UN food security survey found that in 2012, a total of 1.6 million people – or 34 percent of households in the West Bank and Gaza were food insecure, a dramatic rise from 27 percent in 2011. WFP is now reaching close to 650,000 people in West Bank and Gaza with food assistance every year.
Last year Canada was the biggest donor to WFP in the West Bank and Gaza with a total contribution of more than CND$30 million. Their CND$11 million contribution announced on June 17, 2013 will help fund emergency food assistance, food voucher distributions and food security sector coordination.
Half the Bedouin and Herder communities don’t have enough food for their families; they are the poorest and most marginalized populations in the West Bank area. A joint response from WFP/UNRWA is reaching around 30,000 people with much needed food.
In Jericho shoppers using electronic vouchers from WFP are buying dairy products, eggs, olive oil, salt and other groceries, most of which are produced locally. In the past three years WFP has injected more than US$100 million into the Palestinian economy through local purchase and the redemption of electronic food vouchers. This investment supports local businesses and generates employment.
