Four Portraits of Displaced Persons Living In Camps In Democratic Republic Of Congo

While some displaced families return to their areas of origin in DRC, others remain in camps in the hope that the security situation will improve in their village. We meet four people living in Mugunga camp near Goma.

Overview

The convergence of renewed conflicts and violence in Eastern DRC, the deterioration of the CAR crisis, and the mounting political tensions in the context of the looming presidential elections of 2016 is resulting in a potential explosive mix in one of the poorest, inaccessible and least developed nations on earth.

Food and Fuel

Since April 2013, WFP has been implementing a food-for-work project in four camps of internally displaced persons (IDPs) around Goma. Participants help to produce fuel briquettes as a substitute for charcoal and firewood. The project, which targets IDPs as well as locals living around the camps, aims to reduce deforestation, improve the livelihoods of the poor and stop attacks on women collecting firewood in the bush.
