World Refugee Day: 20 Million Displaced People Helped By WFP

Working in partnership with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration, national governments and the international community, WFP supports those who no longer have homes to call their own.

Last year, WFP provided food assistance to more than 20 million displaced people in countries such as Libya, Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia, South Sudan, Mali, Afghanistan, Colombia and Myanmar.

WFP is often first on the ground, providing food assistance to internally displaced people and refugees, as well as the host communities who generously take them in.  When refugees arrive home again, WFP’s food assistance helps them begin to rebuild their lives.

"Every mother and every father wants the opportunity to feed their children in their homes - not as displaced people,’’ said WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin.  ‘’We must work together to resolve the causes of displacement. But as long as conflict and natural disasters continue to force people to new locations, we will continue to provide the life-saving support that so many people still need.’
