WFP To Host Joint Meeting Of Humanitarian Agencies On The Deteriorating Situation In The Sahel Region Of West Africa

The UN World Food Programme is hosting a meeting of heads of humanitarian agencies and donor governments on Wednesday 15 February to address the urgent need for a scaling up of  humanitarian assistance in the Sahel, where drought and food shortages are causing hunger and threatening lives

ROME-- “The needs of the millions affected by drought in the Sahel are enormous, and the time to act is now,” said WFP Executive Director, Josette Sheeran. “This gathering comes at a critical moment as humanitarian agencies are gearing up their response in an effort to prevent a crisis becoming a disaster.”

The Executive Director of WFP, Josette Sheeran, will chair the meeting, which will also be attended by the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), José Graziano da Silva; the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Kanayo F. Nwanze; the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos; the Administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), Helen Clark; the European Union’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva; the Assistant Administrator of USAID, Nancy Lindborg.

At the end of the meeting, on Wednesday 15 February, participants are expected to deliver a joint statement, and will be available to answer questions from the media.
