WFP assessing damage at Hodeidah warehouse, Yemen
HODEIDAH – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is working to establish the cause of a fire that destroyed a warehouse storing food in the Yemeni port of Hodeidah in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The fire broke out at 03:30 a.m. in a warehouse storing food commodities that are being used as part of WFP's humanitarian response to the needs of millions of Yemeni people caught up in the current conflict.
Local authorities responded to the incident immediately and used all available resources to extinguish the fire. WFP is currently assessing the extent of the damage.
Three years of conflict have pushed Yemen to the brink of famine, resulting in the world’s largest hunger crisis. Every month, WFP delivers desperately needed food assistance to more than 7 million people who live in extreme hunger and do not know where their next meal is coming from.
