WFP And PepsiCo-Tomooh Support Food-For-Education In Upper Egypt For The Fifth Year

CAIRO – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and PepsiCo have celebrated the fifth phase of a partnership designed to improve school attendance and combat malnutrition with the signing of an agreement with the Pepsico Tomooh education programme.

The agreement between WFP and Tomooh, funded by a US$150,000 (more than 900,000 Egyptian Pounds) PepsiCo grant, will benefit schoolchildren in the governorate of Sohag.

"WFP’s food-for-education projects aim at improving the nutritional status of the most vulnerable Egyptians especially women and children in the poorest areas in Upper Egypt and Bedouin communities," said WFP Representative and Country Director for Egypt GianPietro Bordignon.  "This cooperation between WFP, the private sector, the Sohag Governorate and the Ministry of Education is a model on how strategic partnerships can be formed to combat poverty and malnutrition among school age children," Bordignon added.

As part of WFP’s school meals programme, the children receive a monthly take-home ration of 10 kg of rice as an incentive for poorer families to send their children to school regularly.
 
Since 2007, this joint partnership has been helping each year more than 2,600 of the most vulnerable children and their families – a total of some 13,000 people – in 84 schools in Dar El Salam, Geheina and Saqulta districts of Sohag  governorate.

“PepsiCo has been working closely with WFP to support children's education, health and welfare through its program in Sohag governorate. In addition to providing immediate assistance, the program continues to focus on promoting long-term efforts in the education sector,” said Asia pacific,Middle East and Africa Senior Communication Director for PepsiCo –Dubai,  Huw Gilbert.
"We are indeed proud to see that PepsiCo is making a difference, giving back to the community and investing in children’s nutrition and education and, consequently, a prosperous future for them and their country," Gilbert added.

 WFP will use PepsiCo’s contribution to purchase a mid-day school snack of locally produced date bars enriched with minerals and vitamin A covering 25 percent of a child’s nutritional daily needs. This light meal also combats short-term hunger improving children's concentration and school performance.

To date, PepsiCo’s contribution to WFP for its Food for Education programmes has totalled US$ 800,000.
