Statement By WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran On The Conflict In Sudan
WFP has delivered food to more than 26,000 people who have fled the most recent violence in South Kordofan, but I am deeply concerned that any further escalation in the conflict may undermine our efforts to reach the 400,000 people we were feeding in Kordofan before this latest outbreak of fighting.
More than 60,000 people are reported to be on the move in remote and inaccessible areas. Many are vulnerable women and children, who will bear the brunt of the violent upheavals. The precarious security situation is preventing us from distributing food to where it is needed most. For humanitarians it is of grave concern that we have the food, but we cannot get it out to those whose lives depend on it.
If we are to reach the most vulnerable in the coming days, it is vital that we have the secure and unhindered humanitarian access that is essential for our life-saving work delivering food to the hungry.
