Statement by WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran on the appointment of Peter Bakker as WFP Ambassador Against Hunger

We congratulate him on his appointment as a WFP Ambassador Against Hunger, and look forward to tapping into Peter’s insight, enthusiasm and commitment to the fight against hunger.  As an Ambassador Against Hunger, Peter will serve as a role model to other prominent individuals from the world of international business and commerce, demonstrating how they too can have an impact on the lives of hungry people.

The relationship between TNT and WFP has grown over the years, encompassing fundraising, employee exchange programmes, the annual “Walk the World” event and the contribution of logistical support and expertise during high-profile humanitarian emergencies.  This is an admirable legacy for Peter as he looks ahead to his life after TNT.

It is no coincidence that I am announcing this appointment here at the World Economic Forum in Davos, an event at which the TNT and WFP tent has become an almost permanent fixture, and a place where leaders from the private sector can gather to discuss issues relating to food security and nutrition.  Peter has been instrumental in pushing WFP priorities up the agenda here at Davos, forging the connections that lead to innovations in the delivery and development of food assistance programmes for the hungry.

Peter  joins a growing list of Ambassadors Against Hunger, including the actress, Drew Barrymore, the footballer, Kaka, and the marathon runner, Paul Tergat. I look forward to working with Peter in the years ahead and harnessing his energy and creativity to the cause of feeding the hungriest people around the world.
