The charity walk, which starts at Istana Kehakiman, Presint 3 in the nation’s administrative capital, marks the conclusion of YUM! Brands’ 2012 World Hunger Relief campaign in Malaysia.
The campaign, now entering its sixth year, is the world’s largest consumer outreach effort on the issue of hunger. To date, YUM! Brands’ restaurant employees and consumers have raised nearly US$60 million (RM 177.3 million) globally for WFP, making a tangible difference for more than 7.5 million people in 44 countries. Funds raised through the campaign in Malaysia go to WFP’s most urgent hunger needs around the world, and particularly to school meals programmes in Asia. By encouraging children to come to and stay in school, these meals invest in the physical and intellectual potential of the next generation, acting as an important tool for breaking the cycle of hunger and poverty.
“With hundreds of millions of people around the world suffering from hunger, each small contribution to the cause has a real impact,” said Monica Marshall, Deputy Director and Head of Global Private Partnerships. “WFP works with partners like YUM! to make it easier for everyone to play a part in the fight against hunger. ”
“YUM! Brands in Malaysia – particularly KFC, Pizza Hut and Pizza Hut Delivery (PHD) – are happy to support the fight against hunger through our stores in Malaysia,” said Puan Rosniza Baharum, General Manager of Group Corporate Communications of QSR Brands Berhad, a YUM! Brands franchisee company. “Together with our employees and with the support of our customers, we can all make a difference in the fight to solve hunger in our lifetime.”
Since 2007, KFC and Pizza Hut Malaysia have raised a total of RM6.43 million through World Hunger Relief to support WFP and other Malaysian hunger relief charities. As part of its fundraising this year, KFC is also running a “World Hunger Meal” promotion, Pizza Hut a “Hut’s Power Meal” promotion and PHD a “World Hunger Speedy Combos” and “Double Deals” promotion. Customers will have the option to add an extra 50 sen to their meals at KFC and an extra 60 sen at Pizza Hut and PHD, with all proceeds going towards the World Hunger Relief campaign.
The “Be the Movement” event starts at 1.00 pm with a mini carnival, as well as a concert featuring popular performing artists, including Amy Search, Dafi (AF), Suki (One in a Million), VIP and Eiffel Studio. Other popular celebrities joining the charity walk include Vanidah Imran, Rashidi Ishak, and Zain Saidin.
