Japan Announces US$1 Million Grant To WFP’s Resilience-Strengthening Work In South Sudan
JUBA – The Government of Japan has announced a US$1 million contribution to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to support activities enabling communities in South Sudan to restore livelihoods and enhance their resilience against future shocks that affect their food security.
“Japan is committed to assisting the people of South Sudan attain long-term food security and break the cycle of constant hunger crises. These funds will help WFP deliver such assistance to needy communities,” said Kiya Masahiko, the Ambassador of Japan to South Sudan.
WFP will use the Japanese contribution to purchase food that will help meet the immediate food needs of vulnerable people while they work on community asset-creation projects. Some participants may build and rehabilitate infrastructure such as roads and flood-control dikes, while others may expand land for agriculture or improve other assets that will benefit the whole community.
Nearly two years of fighting has devastated the lives of people in the three most conflict-affected states, but even areas previously unaffected by the conflict are now showing signs of severe food insecurity.
“We welcome this additional contribution from Japan, which will boost our efforts to support livelihoods and prevent households and communities from falling deeper into food insecurity,” said WFP Country Director Joyce Luma. “It is important to build resilience and invest in the future in more stable parts of the country while we continue providing life-saving assistance to people directly affected by conflict.”
The contribution from Japan will go towards implementing food-for-assets activities in Lakes State early next year.
