Germany Helps WFP Continue Its Assistance To Displaced & Needy People In Sudan
KHARTOUM – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomed today two substantial contributions totalling €2.5 million (US$2.7 million) from the Government of Germany to support its work across Sudan and help tens of thousands of internally displaced people in Darfur.
WFP will use the first contribution of €2 million (US$2.2 million) to provide some 670 metric tons of protein-rich yellow split peas to more than 470,000 internally displaced and other vulnerable people in Darfur through a general food distribution for one month. It will also enable WFP to purchase supplementary food products (Super Cereal Plus and Super Cereal) for treating and preventing malnutrition among more than 140,000 pregnant and nursing women as well as children under five.
The second contribution of €500,000 (US$553,000) will support the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) which is managed by WFP. UNHAS provides safe and reliable passenger and light cargo services to the entire humanitarian community in Sudan.
“By contributing to the World Food Programme, Germany demonstrates a continued commitment to help those who are in need. It is our share in the fight against hunger in Darfur and it will prevent irreversible damage to the physical and mental development of young children. And keeping UNHAS’ passenger and cargo services running is a critical part of all humanitarian work in Sudan,” said German Ambassador to Sudan Rolf Welberts.
Germany is among WFP Sudan’s top donors, contributing nearly US$5 million towards 2014-2015 emergency operations in addition to providing consistent support to UNHAS operations across the country.
“WFP is grateful to the Government of Germany for this contribution and for always sticking by the most vulnerable people in Sudan, giving them the support they desperately need,” said WFP Sudan Country Director Adnan Khan. “This timely contribution will enable us to provide vital food assistance to those who are hungry as well as helping us to prevent and treat malnutrition among pregnant and nursing mothers and young children.”
Sudan remains one of WFP’s largest and most complex operations, providing food assistance to people suffering from conflict, displacement and chronic under-nourishment in Darfur, along with vulnerable groups in the east and border areas to the south.
For the first half of the year, WFP responded to the food security and nutritional needs of 3.7 million people including 2.8 million vulnerable people in the conflict-affected region of Darfur. Beginning July, WFP will assist 2.3 million people including 1.8 million displaced people. WFP aims to reach all of them with life-saving food assistance and nutrition programmes, as well as recovery and resilience-building activities that help communities to become self-reliant.
