ROME – Today WFP announced that Franca Sozzani, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Italia, will serve as Global Ambassador Against Hunger for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
“We are grateful to Franca Sozzani for choosing WFP and the fight against hunger as her priority commitment in the humanitarian world. In her role as a journalist and editor of leading fashion magazines, Sozzani has always paid great attention to the potential of girls and women in Africa and their empowerment through professional trainings and education,” said WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin.
Franca Sozzani has been involved on the humanitarian front over the years with a number of foundations and institutions. She pioneered a new image of countries otherwise known mainly for war and poverty, with a view to boosting their economic potential, as demonstrated in her campaign “Rebranding Africa.”
“Emphasizing creativity and paying attention to what’s new are the two pillars of my work. Both play a critical role in tearing down cultural and social barriers in order to create a better world. The empowerment of women, also from the economic point of view, and the education, especially of girls, through the WFP’s school feeding programmes, are the main areas in which I want to collaborate with WFP,” said Sozzani.
In her new role as WFP’s Global Ambassador Against Hunger, Franca Sozzani will also work with WFP to increase visibility and help to fundraise for the most serious humanitarian crises, such as the one in the Central African Republic. To bring attention to challenges in the field, Sozzani will travel to visit WFP operations.
Franca Sozzani joins a powerful team of WFP Ambassadors including sporting legends such as marathon runner Paul Tergat, footballer Kaká, US philanthropist Howard Buffett, actor Drew Barrymore, singer Christina Aguilera.
