WFP Deputy Regional Director Visits Bolivia and Paraguay

Ferreira was impressed by the level of involvement of local authorities in the school feeding programme, especially with their efforts to provide children with hot meals in school every day. During her visit to Bolivia, Ferreira met with the Ministers of Planning and of Education, the Vice Ministry of Civil Defense, and the Deputy Foreign Minister. She spoke with them about the new Country Programme, which begins this year in Bolivia until 2017.

During her visit to Paraguay, the WFP Deputy Regional Director visited the capital city of Asuncion to meet government officials. Ferreira met with President Horacio Cartes and with the Head of the National Emergency Secretariat, who thanked WFP for all its efforts in assisting Paraguayans affected by natural disasters. Through its emergency operation in El Chaco, WFP is providing food assistance to 2,600 indigenous families affected by severe floods and drought.

President Cartes and other Paraguayan authorities also showed interest in having WFP provide technical assistance through studies and early warning systems to help them gain a better understanding of the country’s current food insecurity situation. After these official visits in AsunciĆ³n, the WFP official traveled to the Paraguayan Chaco in a military aircraft with government authorities and foreign diplomats to visit the San Agustin community located some 530 km from the Paraguayan capital.

In this visit, Ferreira and other participants of this mission saw the impact of the rehabilitation projects carried out by the communities with the support of WFP and the Paraguayan Red Cross. Especially impressive was the home gardens that allow families to improve their nutrition, and also sell surplus food to generate income.
