African Development Bank Donates Ksh 85 Million to WFP To Fight Hunger In Kenya

“The African Development Bank is pleased to be able to support the Government of Kenya through the World Food Programme in projects which are aimed at assisting communities build their resilience to drought,” said Gabriel Negatu, Director AfDB East Africa Resource Centre.

The donation will allow WFP to provide food assistance to drought-affected communities and, in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, will also provide tanks to help communities store water better.

“The government has been organizing water delivery trucks to supply communities during emergencies but is also working with partners to provide more long-term solutions,” said Engineer David Stower, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Irrigation. He thanked the AfDB on behalf of the Government of Kenya.

Recurrent drought has left many people food insecure, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. In order to improve the resilience of the communities to climatic shocks, WFP’s Food-for-Assets activities are focusing on rain water harvesting, soil and water conservation, the rehabilitation of degraded lands and the production of drought-tolerant crops.

“This contribution from AfDB will make a real difference,” said WFP Kenya Country Director Ronald Sibanda. “We are working with the Kenyan government to promote long-term food security by developing communities’ ability to cope with frequent and prolonged drought.”
