A network of strategically placed warehouses ensures vital storage capacity alongside WFP’s many transport corridors. As not only a way to ensure that food is well-protected and accounted for, warehouses are crucial in pre-positioning food stocks, as it allows WFP to be well-prepared for a sudden, onset emergency. If warehouses do not exist, WFP sets-up mobile warehouses to support any foreseen gaps in storage capacity.
In addition, a tried and tested commodity accounting and tracking system guarantees that stocks are accounted for throughout their journey -- from the moment they arrive in a port until they reach their final destination.
In particularly difficult climate conditions such as excessive heat and humidity, WFP utilizes temperature controlled warehouses where necessary. As some supplementary and nutritious food products are particularly sensitive to temperature, logisticians ensure they are handled with the utmost of care.
