Tongogara Refugee Camp– Some 550 km southeast of Zimbabwe’s capital, Tongogara Refugee Camp has swollen to 7,000 inhabitants in the past year. UNHCR currently provides assistance to cover refugees’ basic needs, including food and shelter. However, the camp is captive to its surrounding’s dry and dusty climate, and few are able to work outside its boundaries. Starting in January 2015, WFP will work with UNHCR to address the food needs of Tongogara’s refugees with a view to provide more sustainable solutions. This will enable UNHCR to re-direct its support towards other programmes that focus on income generation and education. The new WFP-UNHCR partnership in Tongogara Camp will help bridge refugees’ tumultuous past to a more promising future.

Buhera - The day starts early and ends late for Sekai Muzivi, a mother of four. Every morning, she walks seven kilometres from her village in Buhera to neighbouring farms to look for odd jobs. It is a daily gamble —sometimes she fails to find paid labour and even if she does, she is paid with only enough food for a few meals.

Ntabazinduna – Ben Khumalo, a seventy-two year old pensioner from Ntabazinduna, recounts the horror of losing his herd of nine cattle after a raging tick-borne outbreak in 2009 and the ensuing struggle of making ends meet. He squarely blames such tragedy on the inadequacy of dip tanks in his area. He has since picked himself up and boasts of a healthy heard of 17 cattle which he now takes for dipping regularly at the Mfanyana Dip Tank, recently constructed with the help of fellow villagers through WFP’s Productive Asset Creation activities.

Lower Gweru -  WFP is using cash and vouchers in Zimbabwe to tackle hunger where food is available in the market place but where most people cannot afford to buy. In the past, WFP handed out cash to beneficiaries waiting patiently in line. Nowadays, the organization transfers cash and food vouchers via mobile phone. This method is more convenient for the recipient and cheaper for WFP. It’s also a good way of injecting money into cash-poor areas.

Through WFP’s Health and Nutrition programme, thousands of families are once again able to start living without constantly worrying about these basics.

Chingwizi/Mwenezi– The food situation at Chingwizi Resettlement Camp had become dire but, thanks to a generous contribution from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), the UN World Food Programme is able to provide food for the next four months to some 15,625 people displaced in February by flooding in Masvingo province in the south-east.

Muzarabani – In the wilting heat of Muzarabani, a far-flung area 300 kms north of Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, it is hard to imagine that crops can survive. The area lies in Zimbabwe’s arid natural region IV which receives little rainfall and, when it does, is prone to flooding. This is a story of how one village, once dependant on WFP food assistance, has defied the odds and recovered after a series of droughts and floods.

Zvishavane -  As many as 2.2 million people – one quarter of the rural population – are now in need of food assistance. This follows last year’s poor harvest caused by factors including erratic weather patterns and high seed and fertilizer prices. WFP had planned to be assisting 1.8 million people at this stage of the ‘lean season’ (the period before next month’s harvest when most rural families have exhausted their own-produced food stocks) but can only reach 1.2 million people owing to funding challenges.

This time last year, Siphelile Mahlangu planted maize and sorghum seeds on four acres of land, the equivalent of two football pitches - quite a feat for a 69 year-old woman with limited assistance and two children with mental disabilities to support. With only sticks as a fence for her fields, cows broke through and destroyed her entire crop. WFP and partners are providing food to families like Siphelile’s who harvested little, have few income options and are struggling to buy food as prices continue to rise.
