Today, improved national and international responses thankfully mean that famines are rare, but the heavy toll of chronic hunger, affecting those who simply do not get enough of the nutritious food they need for a healthy diet, remains a devastating reality in too many communities around the world. Equity must be hard-wired into all our global efforts to ensure nobody is left behind. We must recognise that income inequality is a significant factor that lies behind the failure of most of the world’s poor and hungry to meet their food needs.

Some 7,000 smallholders in the Acholi subregion of northern Uganda are involved in Purchase for Progress (P4P), a commercial cereal farming initiative of the UN World Food Programme (WFP). (..) Programmes like P4P are welcome in a region that is now peaceful but remains extremely poor.

While the scale of the drought in Uganda has not been as severe as in Somalia, parts of Uganda have suffered from erratic rainfall patterns, in particular in the remote semi-arid plains of Karamoja in the northeast of the country. Ongoing resilience-oriented development programmes in Karamoja - such as the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund, which is supported by WFP) - provide social safety nets for vulnerable populations while supporting them to strengthen and build resilient livelihoods.

Uganda's long-serving leader, Yoweri Museveni, on Sunday pledged to boost food production and tackle inflation in 2012 as he seeks to calm public unrest which rocked the East African nation last year. (..) Uganda until 2010 was the second largest food exporter to the United Nations World Food Program but yields were hurt last year due to poor rains.

Uganda has been classified among the nations faced with an alarming hunger situation, according to the latest Global Hunger Index report. (..) Assessments in the report are based on data collected over the past decade. Key indicators of the hunger situations include undernourishment, underweight and child mortality, which are widely monitored by UN agencies such as UNICEF, WFP, FAO and the WHO.

ABOUT 8 million Ugandans go hungry. This is due to increased food prices, Professor Banabus Kiiza of Makerere University has said. (..) "Food price volatility featuring high prices is likely to continue and possibly increase," the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the World Food Programme and the International Fund for Agricultural Development said in the joint report.

Despite relying on donations, refugees in Nakivale Settlement Camp have not been spared the high food and other commodity prices. (..) The deputy settlement commandant, Mr Johnson Okot, last week told the newly-appointed World Food Programme (WFP) country director, Mr Sory Ouane, that the biggest challenge the camps face was food shortage.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia gave Tuesday a humanitarian aid of 206 tons of dates for the benefit of the Saharawi refugees, the Saharawi Embassy in Algeria reported. (..) From his part, Mr. Osama Osman, director of World Food Program (WFP) office in Algeria, noted that this assistance “falls also within the frameworks of two-year programme until April 2012,” appreciating the international contributions to success the Programme as in the case of Saudi Arabia and countries from Europe, America and others.
