According to the Cadre Harmonisé results, 13 million people in the region, including Gambia, are food insecure despite average harvests. The projected performance of the 2013-2014 crop is mixed, with above-average production in the coastal countries.
The cumulative impact of staple food price changes on the cost of the basic food basket from October to December 2013 was moderate. In a number of countries of the region seasonally adjusted prices of staples increased significantly between Q3 and Q4 2013. These include a 22% rise each for millet and sorghum in Gambia.
