Miguel Barreto, WFP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, will meet this week with government officials from Nicaragua to discuss WFP's current food security operations and technical support initiatives in the country. While in Nicaragua he will visit smallholder farmers who are participants of WFP Purchase for Progress initiatives.

In José Dolores Estrada school of Los Brasiles community, the Ministry of Education initiated the second food distribution of School Feeding Programme covering the months of May, June, July and part of August. This distribution will feature 1 million 50 thousand children in preschool and primary public schools, subsidized and special schools, said Deputy Minister of Education, Norma Irías. WFP ensures that those in need do not go hungry. This month food was distributed to one of the most remote areas of Nicaragua, the Miskito communities. It is a region that few have visited. Its people are natives to the Caribbean coast, retain their own language, ancestral traditions, and communal organization.

Martha Mautute is a 36 year old single woman from the town of Jalapa, Nueva Segovia. Martha has been an active member of the smallholder farmer’s organization Nuevo Horizonte (New Horizons) for the past 5 years. While speaking with her she adamantly expressed how blessed and happy she is because of the opportunity she has to now share new knowledge with other women of her community.
