For the families still sleeping outside in the city’s makeshift tent districts, life is very far from back to normal. Many families have lost their homes so even though the tremors have stopped, for now, they have no place to return to.

I have never strongly understood the importance of our organisation's work until this devastating emergency. Despite all my grief for the situation the earthquake has caused, I feel privileged to be here in Nepal, being able to make an impact.

25th April 2015: at 11:56am local time, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, one of the poorest nations in the world. These facts highlight how dramatic the hunger situation was in the country even before the seismic destruction arrived to further deteriorate its condition. WFP has started emergency operations with staff from around the world by providing common services for the entire humanitarian community - from storage facilities to supporting the transportation of not only food, but other crucial relief items.

Nimdoma Sherpa, a former WFP School Feeding recipient became one of the youngest Nepali women to climb Mt. Everest at the age of 17. Following her conquest of Mt. Everest, she joined the Seven Summits Women Team, with the aim of climbing the seven highest peaks of the world. She recently fulfilled her aspiration after conquering Mt. Vinson Massif in Antarctica in December 2014, at the age of 24. She speaks to WFP Nepal about her penchant for climbing and her future plans.

At the age of 17, Nimdoma Sherpa became the first WFP school meals recipient to climb Mt. Everest. Now 23, she is just one mountain away from climbing the world's seven highest mountains in each of the continents.
