Heavy monsoon rains have poured into Myanmar since mid-July – making rivers and creeks overflow with rainwater. What it is now considered as the worst flood to happen in Myanmar in recent decades, has affected more than 1 million people. Following the official request for assistance from the Government, the World Food Programme (WFP) has initiated a rapid emergency response.

When heavy rain caused the Bago river to break its banks in early August and the Government of Myanmar asked WFP to step in, the WFP office in Yangon was short-staffed, but willing to help. Communication Officer Myint Myint Kyu – who used to work in a field office – quickly volunteered to step in to get food to those who lost their homes in the flood. She tells us about the response.

As the new academic year kicks off in June, WFP is restarting its school feeding activities, reaching some 232,000 children in 1,800 schools across Myanmar.

When demonstrators ransacked the WFP offices in Sittwe, Rakhine State in March 2014, WFP had to temporarily suspend food distributions. But just ten days after the attack WFP was able to resume its work, providing food to 116,000 people displaced by intercommunal violence in 2012.

In January 2014, accompanied by World Food Programme (WFP) Country Director and Representative Domenico Scalpelli, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative ad interim Ayaki Ito and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Director Toily Kurbanov, Ambassador Numata went around Rakhine State to assess the impact of the assistance programmes funded by the Government of Japan.

After lecturing at Yangon University, Khin Moe Aye decided to move into humanitarian work in her own country. Now a programme officer in the Yangon Country Office, an important part of her job is to battle food insecurity and manage tensions between the groups of people she helps. Khin tells us about some of the challenges she's faced while delivering food to remote parts of the country.

WFP’s work worldwide is entirely funded through voluntary contributions. In Myanmar, donors have generously contributed more than US$50 million to WFP’s operation, which has allowed WFP to provide assistance to an average of half a million people a month around the country. Nevertheless needs remain high, especially in Rakhine state where up to 140,000 people remain displaced over a year after the first outbreak of violence.
