Every year, the World Food Programme organises a drawing contest in each of the countries where it has a school feeding programme. For 2015, the topic was "Zero Hunger, Endless Possibilties," aiming to show how good nutrition can pave the way for a better future. This year, WFP Mali held the competition only in the Mopti region in order to provide better support for the participating schools.

In 2014, the USAID, through its Food for Peace program, was the largest donor to the World Food Programme’s emergency response in Mali. Through Food for Peace support to WFP, the American people donated both in-kind food contributions and funding to help vulnerable communities, primarily in Mali’s unstable northern regions.

In Mali, even at the best of times, poor infrastructure and washed out roads in the rainy season make access to remote communities a constant challenge for humanitarian workers. Add to that the ongoing security concerns of the past two years, including frequent rocket-fire in the North and IED (improvised explosive device) explosions on roads, and humanitarian access can become very difficult.

During the lean season, when food from the last harvest begins to run out, levels of malnutrition can nearly double. Any added stress during these difficult months can further threaten the health of already-vulnerable people. In Mali, WFP is working hard to make sure a grim situation does not get worse.

Below-average rainfall in 2013 brought meager harvests and food stocks have run out early this year. Malian farmers who planted in May must now wait until October for the next harvest, and vulnerable communities are feeling the pressure.
