In the following text Dorte Ellehammer, former WFP Representative in El Salvador, bids farewell to the country in which she served for five years and describes the actions taken during her tenure: "I am satisfied that during my time in El Salvador we developed innovative solutions to hunger and malnutrition. These initiatives sought to promote changes in attitudes and practices in health, food, nutrition, handling and storage of food, through the implementation of educational and participatory strategies."

The coast of Isla de Mendez in El Salvador was at the epicenter of the country’s first tsunami simulation exercise jointly organized by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Ministry of Home Affairs of El Salvador to assess the capacity response of authorities and also prepare communities for this kind of event.

The Coffee Rust and last year’s prolonged drought severely reduced the income and food reserves among Salvadorans who depend on temporary farm jobs and subsistence farming to feed their families. Thanks to Progresando El Salvador, an USAID-funded project implemented by WFP and local NGOs, 23 women in the community of Manantiales discovered new ways of feeding their families.

Salvadoran families are still recovering from the impact of Coffee Rust –a fungus which reduces crop yields and quality—and the severe drought in 2014 that hit Central America. In late 2014, WFP in El Salvador began voucher distributions, assisting 11,500 families. In the past, food distributions were limited to rations of maize, beans and rice, but today the new vouchers allow families to choose the food they prefer to eat.

The Coffee Rust outbreak in El Salvador affected coffee production, labor demand, family income and therefore the food security of thousands of families who depend on coffee production. Thanks to USAID support, about 8.200 Salvadoran families will receive food vouchers for the next eight months to help them rebuild their livelihoods, improve their food security and reduce poverty. WFP will implement this project with authorities and NGOs.
