Malawi - Chronology of WFP in Malawi
WFP started its first operation in Malawi in January 1965, just six months after independence. In a normal year in Malawi, smallholder farmers run out of food about three months before the harvest. The collapse of the agriculture credit schemes in 1994 led to a reduction in seed and fertiliser uptake. As a result of this and the drought, there was a significant reduction in smallholder maize production.
