Kyrgyzstan - Rapid Survey of Small-Scale Bakers in Osh and Jalalabad Cities, July 2010
The survey was conducted to evaluate the main constraints of small-scale bakers to resume their baking and sale activities at their pre-June levels, and opportunities for support.
Data were collected from 55 small-scale bakers in these cities. Results indicate that decreased consumer demand stemming from household displacement and decreased income, is the main reason for depressed or cessation of activity. Some bakers also face problems with procuring wheat flour due to the closure or destruction of some mills and markets. As a result, their wheat flour stocks have shrunk. While their expenditures have decreased on a par with the reduced activity, many are indebted and will have difficulties to reimburse their debt as the prices of coal (main cooking fuel), wheat flour and oil have increased.
