Through this school feeding project, WFP aims to support the Royal Government of Bhutan in its policy of improving access to education by providing nutritious meals for schoolchildren, particularly those from rural families and vulnerable to food insecurity.
This project addresses short- term hunger faced by children living far away from schools and reduces the financial burden on poor rural parents; it also assists in alleviating certain micronutrient deficiencies, while contributing to an overall improvement of school enrolment rates and attendance. Particular attention is given to reducing gender disparity in education, in line with Millennium Development Goal 3.
This project reflects the increasing role being assumed by the Government in the school feeding programme as part of a transition phase to full Government support. The focus of WFP assistance during 2008–2012 will be on primary education and capacity-building of government counterparts.
The project is in accordance with WFP’s Strategic Objective 4 and corresponds to Outcome 3 of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework for Bhutan and Millennium Development Goals 2 and 3.
