Food scheme may include pulses, oil in future: Ministry
The food ministry [India] hinted at adding these to the list of items to be sold through public distribution system (PDS) at highly subsidized rates. Addressing a conference that was attended by top functionaries of UN World Food Programme (UNWFP) and food minister K V Thomas on Thursday, department secretary Sudhir Kumar said, "These items will be made available in PDS. Earlier, Thomas told the UNWFP delegation headed by its executive director Ertharin Cousin that the country had surplus production of wheat and other foodgrains and the government could successfully roll out the scheme across states. "By enacting a law to provide foodgrains at very subsidized rates, an earlier practiced welfare measure has now been made a right for people," the minister said.
