The Centre of Excellence to host Ghana for study visit on school feeding programme

Brasilia - A high-level delegation from Ghana´s government to visit Brazil for exchange on school feeding and local purchase initiatives between August 20th and 31st

The mission, composed of representatives from the ministries of local government, food and agriculture and education as well as members of the WFP Ghana Country Office, will start with a field trip to Natal, Brazil northeast region, followed by an official agenda with Brazilian authorities in Brasilia. Ghana is in the formative stages of establishing a universal home-grown school feeding programme as part of the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP). Their aim is to spend 80 per cent of the feeding cost in the local communities; thus the Brazilian example of the integration of government-supported purchasing from smallholoder farmers (PAA) with social protection such as the National School Feeding Programme (PNAE) is an instructive model. Throughout the two-week study visit, hosted by the Centre, the delegates will be introduced to the historical development and institutional framework of Brazil´s Zero Hunger Strategy, which encompasses PNAE and its linkages to family agriculture, and meet many of the key actors and organisations involved in the production and distribution of food at a local level.
